Today in Western Perspective, columnist Rocky Barker argues industries that typically enjoy Republican support are creating Democratic converts with their environmental policies.
Neighbors of factory farms in southern Idaho complained of dust, odor and ground water pollution, but got little satisfaction from Republicans in power, Barker writes. Instead, they joined the Idaho Conservation League, threatened to sue, got results, and may have altered their political leanings in the process.
Similar sentiments are showing up with north Idaho residents downwind of field-burning farmers.
But environmentalists will have to change their tactics to capitalize on not-in-my-backyard issues, Barker says, looking for local solutions instead of turning to D.C.
