Alberta launches planning effort tied to watersheds, water availability
Alberta tried and failed to address growth on a province-wide scale more than a decade ago, but officials said that development in the Canadian province has reached the tipping point and they are proposing a province-wide framework on managing growth that divides Alberta into six regions roughly defined by six major watersheds, with regions expected to create growth plans tied to water availability.

Residents of one Utah county favor higher taxes to preserve open space
Conservation easements currently cover about 11,000 acres of Cache County in Utah, and a recent poll of 300 residents in Utah's historic cheese basket found 71 percent of those surveyed supported a $20 million open space bond measure to keep subdivisions at bay.

Utah man vows to fight off-road ticket to the finish
Dan M. Jessop received a ticket for riding his off-road vehicle on a road in Washington County south of Zion National Park, a road the Utah man said is owned by the county and not by the federal Bureau of Land Management, and Jessop has received more than $30,000 in donations to fight the ticket.

Federal agents remove 3 wolves in Montana for killing livestock
Agents with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services shot and killed three wolves last week after receiving authorization from the state to remove the wolves because they had killed one calf and attacked another south of Dillon.

Federal judge rejects Montanans for Multiple Use suit against USFS
Montanans for Multiple Use filed a lawsuit challenging the Flathead National Forest's adoption of 23 amendments to its 1986 management plan on the grounds that the amendments were a piecemeal, de facto revision of the plan, but on March 31, a federal judge in Washington, D.C. tossed the lawsuit, and said the group did not correctly follow the administrative appeal process in challenging the forest's plan.
