Colorado group uses homeless workers to build housing for homeless
The Colorado Coalition for the Homeless' Renaissance Works jobs program, which provides construction jobs to the homeless in Denver, broke ground on a 98-unit apartment complex on Thursday that will provide housing for the homeless.

Montana county uses $100K of PILT money for microloan program
The Ravalli County Commission approved allocating $100,000 of federal money paid to the Montana county for untaxed federal lands to create a microloan program for small, single-person or home-based businesses that wouldn't qualify for loans from traditional financial institutions.

Montana tribes pitch plan to remove lake trout from Flathead Lake
The 10-year co-management plan for Flathead Lake between the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and Montana expires at the end of 2010, and the tribes have pitched a pilot project to remove lake trout using an aggressive netting process as a "discussion starter" on a new management agreement.

Montana wildlife agency struggles with bighorn problem
The area northeast of Missoula offers great habitat for bighorn sheep, and there are four herds roaming the mountains near the western Montana community, but one herd has taken up residence in West Riverside, creating headaches for the state wildlife agency--and on occasion, stopping traffic on Interstate 90, and now Montana is asking other states if they're interested in some bighorn sheep.

EPA's process on Colorado uranium mine angers environmental groups
Environmental Protection Agency officials countered criticism from Colorado groups questioning the agency's behind-the-scenes work with Powertech Uranium Corp., the uranium company working to get EPA approval on in-situ uranium mines in Colorado and South Dakota, by saying the preliminary work was done merely to get technical data and that any permit process for such mines would be open for public scrutiny and comment.

Idaho state, federal lawmakers spar on health care bill
Rep. John Rusche, the Democratic leader of the Idaho House and former senior vice president and chief medical officer at Regence Blue Shield, said U.S. Sen. Jim Risch's claim that health care legislation under debate would spur a "massive" tax increase is false and that the plan would actually save Idahoans $13 million a year; Risch said Rusche's estimate is based on an incorrect assumption.

Economic forecasts at Montana forum hold a tint of pink
At the Missoula Business Forum Thursday, business leaders and regional economist Larry Swanson said the Montana city's economy would slowly emerge from the recession, and the recent closure of Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. won't have the derailing effect on the economy it would have had decades ago, because the economy has become more diversified.
